i-MetrO

I added 2 new features to i-Métro:

  • Line routes: just as in the PDA/smartphone program, you can see the routes for each line in our databases, for any specified time.

  • Maps: an interface with GoogleMaps (still in beta) lets you see your start or end stop on a map of the city.

    - The maps are available only for the cities where we have geolocalization data. Today it includes Paris (almost complete), Madrid & London (major subway stops) and Bologna (a handful of stops).

    - To see the map, click on the "balloon" next to the stop name in the results screen. If there is no "balloon", the map is not available (for lack of information).

    - Google has maps for selected countries only. It means that whereas we display an actual map for London, the other cities present a satellite view instead.

    - We build this as some sort of a proof of concept to illustrate what we could do on MetrO for PDA & smartphone, if we find the right partner (for the maps).

    - If you want the map implemented for you city, please send us a simple list containing the geographical coordinates (in decimal form) for each stop or station (please be sure to use the same spelling as in our database). But first check that your city is covered in GoogleMaps.

These features should work on any "modern" standard-compliant web browser, but I have tested it only in Internet Explorer (version 6 for Windows) and Firefox (for Windows). If you encounter a problem with your browser, let me know (although I can't promise I will be able to fix it).

MetrO "smart" download

On a suggestion by M. Mills, I have added the option to select all the cities in a country with a single click (on the checkbox attached to the country name): smart download page.

Paris (works)

There is quite a number of changes on the Paris subway network this week-end: Belleville is (supposedly) re-opened, the works on line 5 are suspended in August and line 14 will be partially closed next week (to prepare the future extension to Olympiades).

The next version is planned next week-end.

S. Macdonald sent me some places of interest (with detailed information) for Glasgow (Scotland, UK). I also corrected some minor errors on the file.

Wednesday, July 27, 2005

It appears some changes occured on the subway service in New York (USA) last May and I was not aware of them. Will reported a change on line N but there may be more...

Tuesday, July 26, 2005

Kazan

Another city will soon start operation on its firts subway line: Kazan (Russia). I even tried to build a version in russian ;-)

Nanjing

The new subway in Nanjing (China) will soon start regular operation on its first line: it is time to build a database for that city!

Luxembourg

G. Heinen sent an update for line 6 in Luxembourg, which is quite wrong in the current version.

Osaka

Following a mail from A. Groves, I have realized some connections were missing on the monorail line in Osaka (Japan). This was affecting both the Osaka file and the more complete Kyoto-Osaka database.

Monday, July 25, 2005

Kuala Lumpur

J. Mokhtar notified me of a change on the Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) network: a new stop has opened (one year ago...).

London (special)

As planned, the London tube service has changed this morning: download the update file here.

Updated at 10:40 (GMT), since the information on the TFL web site got less confusing.

London (special)

Yet another update for the London special file (use the link from the post below).

Tomorrow, the Metropolitan line will run again to Aldgate. I will publish a new file late this evening or early tomorrow.

MetrO 5.3.4 in progress

After a long period without any spare time, I took a few hours today for coding :-)

I have tried to improve the text - lists synchronization feature:
- The current text entry is highlighted in the POI list (as well as in the complete stop list and the contacts list).
- Instead of opening the complete stop list on the first character entered (when there is no list on screen), the contact list is displayed if the current entry starts with an '@'.
- And other minor enhancements.

I just need to check that those changes do not have a negative impact on performance...

London (special)

It looks like the service is improving on the London tube service: download the update file here.

Saturday, July 23, 2005

Karlsruhe

An anonymous user has reported a minor error in the Karlsruhe (Germany) database.

Albenga & La Spezia

London (special)

Another update for the special London file: the Northern line service is partially interrupted.

Friday, July 22, 2005

San Diego

E. P. Scott sent an update for the trolley lines in San Diego (USA), after the opening of a new line.

Wednesday, July 20, 2005

Madrid

I have just discovered that my source file for Madrid (Spain) was slightly corrupted. I don't think it has an impact on its content but you may observe a few weird things (like the name "Madr" instead of "Madrid") and I recommend you delete this file when you get the update next month.

Addition on 07/21: since it is possible that some problems arise with the file, you can now download the fixed Madrid database.

Tuesday, July 19, 2005

Please download the new versions:

New York

M. Mazuryk sent the information for the LIRR system in New York (USA). Given its complexity, it may have some shortcomings (not to mention the possible errors we will try to spot before release) but I hope it will help New Yorkers anyway.

Philadelphia

On a suggestion by J. Tannenwald (following my post about merging the files for New York City and Philadelphia), I have added the NJT Northeast Corridor line in the Philadelphia (USA) file.

London - Special

After the attacks yesterday, the service in London (UK) transport system is disrupted and we are providing a special version of our database, according to the information we have at this time.

We sincerely hope it will help people in this difficult time. All our sympathy goes to the victims, their families and all the Londoners.

Download the file HERE. (please note that it is named "London Special" and it will not replace the regular version: remember to select it in the cities list).

Bogota

There has been a change on the Transmilenio service in Bogota (Colombia).

Tuesday, July 05, 2005

New York & Philadelphia

M. Mazuryk reported some inconsistencies on the NJT River Line in the New York & Philadelphia (USA) databases.

He also asked if it was possible to build one file for both cities (like we did for Washington & Baltimore): although I may try to, I'm afraid this would lead to a file too large for the program to handle.

The software has some limits in the number of "objects" (lines, stops, connections, ...) it can handle and even if we were to overcome these limitations, the calculations might take very long (several minutes) on occasions...

Sunday, July 03, 2005

Delhi

A new section opened (today?) on line 2 in Delhi (India).

Savona

T. Caviglia sent the rest of the data for the Savona (Italy) database.

Mexico

From a mail by C. Castellanos, I added a new Metrobus line to the Mexico City (Mexico) database.

Once again, I received only a scan of the official leaflet: potential contributors should be aware that maintaining more than 300 city files is taking us an enormous amount of time and it is very important to prepare the data you want included in our files (see the "Contribution" section in the user guide)...

Thursday, June 30, 2005

He also suggested the addition of a new place of interest in London (UK): the Parasol Unit.

Wednesday, June 22, 2005

Vilnius

F. Wilhelm sent the complete bus and trolleybus network for Vilnius (Lithuania). It was almost too large for the program but I finally made a valid database ;-)

He also sent me the bus network for Savona (in Italy as well).

Problems with my mailbox

For all of you who try to contact me, you should be aware of some troubles I have with my mailbox on Yahoo! Mail (where all the mails you send end up, including those sent to the nanika.net domain).

In the last weeks, the Y! mail service tend to flag a lot of valid mails as spam and, given the number of spams I get (hundreds per day), it happens that I delete them without noticing they are genuine... The last example was last night: I realized one mail was about the Las Vegas file just after I pressed the "delete" button (and it is lost forever).

Therefore, if you send me a mail, expecting a reply (especially for contributions), and do not get one within a few days, please try again (and try changing the subject to something really meaningful)...

Sorry for the inconvenience,
Patrice

And another addition has arrived for Napoli (Italy), with still more to come, eventually.

Monterrey

M. Leon sent updates for the Monterrey (Mexico) system, including new TransMetro routes.

Napoli

Nesis sent additional boat lines for the Napoli (Italy) database. It was also a good opportunity to add operating times on the other lines.

It looks like there are a few errors in the file that need fixing (inappropriate connections). I just hope I'll get them before the next release (planned this week-end, if all goes well).

Wednesday, June 08, 2005

Utrecht

The Utrecht (Netherlands) database required a major update (on the bus network). Thanks to K. de Bondt for providing the information.

Following a mail by S. Baumgart, I have checked and improved (hopefully) the express bus lines (X lines) in Berlin (Germany).

Brimingham

Wednesday, May 11, 2005

Paris ("full" version)

The "full" version of the Paris (France) database contains the subway and bus systems and I'm convinced a number of connections are missing between these. Fabrice reported one such case (at "Jules Joffrin") but don't hesitate to send us a mail if you can find other similar cases.

Translations (for PalmOS version)

The new confirmation dialog I recently added in the PalmOS version of MetrO has already been translated in many languages. However, some are still missing: Arabic, Basque, Catalan, Chinese (Big5), Corsican, Croatian, Czech, Filipino, Finnish, Greek, Hungarian, Malay, Polish, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Swedish, Thai, Vietnamese. If you want to help, the string to translate is "The file for "city name" already exists on card, do you want to replace it?"

In some cases, there are other strings which are not translated. If you find some in your language, do not hesitate to send me a note, I will be pleased to complete the work.

Monday, May 09, 2005

Version 5.3.1

MetrO 5.3.1 is out! See the details at the usual address...

Saturday, May 07, 2005

MetrO for PalmOS translations

I added new versions of MetrO for PalmOS in Bulgarian (almost complete), Macedonian and Serbian (some strings are still missing). I have successfully tested the former with CyrHack but I could not test the latter; I think they should work all right with PiLoc (from Paragon software).

To stay in sync with the PocketPC version, I also wanted to add the Georgian version but although there is a CyrHack extension for this language, I have no idea of the character encoding I should use (and it's probably not Unicode, so that I will have trouble converting the text). Therefore, for the time being this version will be kept on hold.

Thursday, May 05, 2005

Chartres

G. Le Lann sent the data to build a file for the bus network in Chartres (France).

Wednesday, May 04, 2005

I hate PalmGear

PalmGear (the well known Palm software distribution site) has recently announced that they will take over the software section on the palmOne web site (as soon as next month).

One problem is that these bright guys have come up with an extraordinarily complex process to submit software for the palmOne site (I'm still wondering what went through their mind). But when I finally tried to go through the process, I discovered that it does not work... For a company that takes 50% on the sales, I'm wondering what the commercial software vendors will say...

The consequence is that I'm afraid that MetrO will disappear entirely from the palmOne web site. That's a pity but at least that won't change our account balance!

Luxembourg

S. Labastille sent the complete (or almost) data to build a database for the bus network in Luxembourg.

Tuesday, May 03, 2005

Milano

On a recommendation from Maurizio, I have added the previously missing line 73 (useful to reach the Linate airport) in the Milano (Italy) database. I also added the airports in the places of interest.

Monday, May 02, 2005

Berlin

On the Berlin (Germany) database, the works at Papestraße are finished and the new "M" lines need some cleaning up (some stops have the same names as subway or rail stations but are completely different). Thanks to M. Ciesielski!

Belo Horizonte & New York

Advertisement on i-MetrO

Partly because of the recent troubles we had with our free hosting service for i-MetrO, we have decided to insert Google ads in the service. The idea is that, if the ads pay enough money, we may be able to afford a better host.

Don't hesitate to provide your feedback on this matter...

Köln/Bonn

Some changes appear to have occured in Köln/Bonn (Germany), for example, one of the airport shuttle buses does not run anymore, apparently. I have updated what I could detect (including line colors) but the file will need probably some thorough checking.

Montpellier

With data provided by K. de Bondt and some research of my own, I have updated the Montpellier (France) database which is getting a bit old... I'm not sure it is absolutely up to date yet but at least it is better than before and it now contains operating time information.

Wednesday, April 27, 2005

Angers

G. Le Lann reported a small error (with possible extended effects) in the Angers (France) database.

Den Haag

K. de Bondt reported some mistakes (on connections) in the Den Haag (Netherlands) database.

Monday, April 25, 2005

i-MetrO

I still don't know the reason but i-MetrO is broken again for some cities. I investigate the matter, as well as the guys from the hosting service (which is free, let's not forget that) but I have no idea when this will be solved. Sorry for the inconvenience.

One positive note though: I found out a mistake that prevented to use the service for Freiburg in Breisgau. I fixed it and it's one of the cities that work all right ;-)

[Edit] The service is running again this Tuesday morning (CET). Enjoy!

Paris (works)

This is the first update for the "temporary" Paris databases, taking into account the works in the subway. Due to the RATP planning, these files will be valid only until next Friday (April 29th).

The files are at the same address as the previous versions:

  • Paris-travaux, containing the complete rail network
  • Paris-full-travaux, containing the inner city subway, bus and RER networks (not usable on a Palm device)

Sunday, April 24, 2005

Brest

I added regional bus lines in the Brest (France) database, with information provided by M. Pouliquen.

Translation for MetrO on PalmOS

The new confirmation dialog has been translated in dutch by S. Guyt.

Still 26 languages to go...

Friday, April 15, 2005

Bugs on MetrO for PalmOS

J. Hollman found a bug on the interface with the address book: when specifying only part of a stop name with a time, the program would not recognize the stop and ignore it. This will be fixed in the next release.

Payalba (member of the PalmAttitude forum) found two problems on palmOne devices:
  • Tapping on a button that has the focus ring (on a Treo 600/650 or a TungstenT5) and moving the stylus out will not release the focus from the button. It looks like palmOne has broken compatibility with older versions of the OS: I can't fix this issue without losing compatibility with versions older than 3.5.
  • There are display errors if you play with the DIA hide/display commands in left-handed landscape mode. I have solved part of the problem but I still have to work on it.

The "history" (list of previously used stop names) will be displayed only if it is not empty. I decided to add this test because I was puzzled to see a blank screen after 2 taps on the "stop" button.

Zwickau

C. Laufs sent data for the city of Zwickau (Germany). It is not yet complete but I hope we'll finish it for the next release.

Kharkov, Novosibirsk

Some changes were missing on the russian version of Kharkov (Ukraine) and the "roman" transcription has been changed to Ukrainian.

The Novosibirsk (Russia) file has been slightly enhanced and a russian version will now be provided as well.

Thanks to A. Ilchenko for the updates!

Gent

A new stop will open today on line 1 in Gent (Belgium). Thanks to L. Debacker for the notice.

Thursday, April 14, 2005

Tuesday, April 12, 2005

Tokyo

The JR East company has enhanced some services in the Tokyo area (Japan). Katagiri-san sent me the information.

While I was "playing" with the file, I also added colors for the JR lines (as shown on the map on the JR East web site).

On suggestions by L. Saggin, I improved the italian translations for the options in the preferences dialog.

Santiago de Chile

R. Molina provided additional places of interest for Santiago de Chile.

Köln / Cologne

Frank has added detailed information on a few places of interest (museums in that case) in Köln (Germany).

MetrO online

Our online services are now up and running optimally again (at least for the time being).

If I did not mess up, the PDA update service should even be more accurate in dertermining whether an update is required or not on every file (there could have been some approximations in the previous versions).

New York

E. Rodriguez notified me of some changes on the MTA fares in New York City (USA).

Warsaw

A new station has opened in Warsaw (Poland). I also added a light rail line to the existing single subway line.

Problems with our online services

Since the new release last Monday, our online services (i-MetrO, network update and "smart" download) tend to behave erratically... Apparently, the amount of data proves too much for the server.

I will try to fix these problems as soon as possible, but in the meantime, I'm afraid that the direct update service won't be available at all and the "smart" download service may return errors. After a quick fix, i-MetrO seems to be running again.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Luzern

From a notice by C. Omlin (regarding a change on one line), I have completely revised the Luzern (Switzerland) database which was quite out of date.

Translations

I have received translations in Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese (in addition to the current English, French, German & Norwegian) for the new confirmation message added in the latest version of MetrO for PalmOS (as explained here). Thanks to S. Predieri, S. Renaudin, J. Calado, E. Cuadrado Albite, B. Arregocés, J.A. Gonzalez, A. Escudero-Soler!

There are still 27 languages missing ;-)

Marseille

A. Cravero notified me that the tramway line in Marseille (France) has been closed for some time, because of constructions works for the future tram network.

St Petersbourg

A new station has opened on the St Petersbourg (Russia). I also changed the transcription of the station names in the roman alphabet, to what should be the standard.

Minsk

F. Wilhelm sent an update for Minsk (Belarus) and added a few places of interest...

MetrO for PalmOS & landscape mode

Unrelated to the new version, one user reported that the behavior of the program when hiding/showing the DIA panel in left-handed landscape mode is quite buggy. I'll try to fix that in the next release.

MetrO release 5.3.0

The new version is out: see the MetrO home page for details.

Because of early reports of performance problems, I have decided to remove one of the features I added (and announced here) on the PalmOS version: the exploration of the default installation directory on a memory card for MetrO databases.

Dijon

The database for Dijon (France) was obsolete. Thanks to R. Vernay the next version will be quite up to date.

Paris

There are currently a lot of works on the Paris (France) subway network and there are many temporary updates on services. To take these changes into account, we provide 2 new files:
  • Paris-travaux, containing the complete rail network
  • Paris-full-travaux, containing the inner city subway, bus and RER networks (still not usable on a Palm device)

Be aware that given that the RATP schedule for the works is quite heavy, if you use these files, you should be prepared to update them frequently (at least every other week, I guess). And I hope I will be able to keep up...

MetrO bug on Treo 650?

One user has reported an error on a patched Treo 650 (from Sprint PCS) and I have not been able to solve the problem (the symptoms are just a crash and reset on startup).

Since the software has been tested and proved to work on the original Treo 650 and after going through the usual checks, I'm wondering whether the Treo patch, supposed to fix memory problems, could be the cause of the trouble.

If anyone has tested the program on the same configuration, I'd like to hear about your experience: reply to this post or send me a mail (my address is in the about box in the program).

Thanks for your feedback.

München/Munich

I will at last be able to update the München (Germany) network after its complete renewal last December, thanks to M. Freitag. It should be available in the next release (due quite soon), although I have a lot of work at the moment.

MetrO for PalmOS

The next release will bring some improvements on the interface with the Palm address book:
  • Specific handling of the new "Contacts" application (on recent palmOne devices), which will let you use any of the 9 custom fields (instead of the first 4 only)
  • The information for an address is formatted on multiple lines (instead of comma-separated fields)
  • The telephone number in the information on a contact is the preferred number, as selected in the address book application

Bug on MetrO for Palm

M. Ciesielski (who is the only one to have provided a translation for the new alert, mentioned in this blog a few days ago) has found a bug with the address book interface in the program for PalmOS (fortunately it happens in very specific circumstances).

It will be fixed in the next release, but in the meantime, you'd better avoid ending the Metro custom fields entries with a semi-colon.

Kyoto

This will probably the last of the japanese cities I check, for the time being. Besides a few errors I fixed, I made a japanese version of the Kyoto (Japan) database, complete with places of interest (that was quite painful, and I'm not even sure I made no mistake, because of my limited capabilities in japanese).

Japan

Still on the same tracks, I have improved the files for Kitakyushu, Okinawa and Sendai (adding icons, colors, operating times...). I also fixed a number of minor errors in the Osaka file. And finally, I prepared japanese versions for all those files.

Thursday, March 17, 2005

Sapporo

Again in Japan, I have enhanced the file for Sapporo (line icons, colors, operating times...) and I prepared a japanese version as well.

MetrO for Palm

This week-end, I could at last spend some time on the program and improve some features, among which the most important are:

  • The "Copy database to memory card" feature in the city list will become a "Move database to memory card" feature. After a few years of usage I think the cards are reliable enough to take the risk to remove the original file after it has been copied.
To keep things clean, if the file already exists in the destination directory, a message will ask for confirmation to replace it.
And here I need your help because the confirmation message needs a translation in the different languages the program supports : "The file for "city name" already exists on card, do you want to replace it?"

  • Because of the number of support requests from users who don't take the time to read the user guide and keep asking why the software can't find the cities they have installed on their memory card, I have decided that the program will now search the default installation directory (/PALM/Launcher) in addition to the MetrO specific one (/PALM/Programs/Metro).
A possible side effect is that if you have a lot of files in that directory (which you should not), the search may take some time...

Wednesday, February 16, 2005

Madrid

According to M. López, the connections between the Metrosur and C5 lines in Madrid (Spain) need some adjustment: the program does not use those connections efficiently in the current version.

Tuesday, February 15, 2005

The previous update, a few days ago, did not correct all the changes in the Stuttgart (Germany) network. Some more were sent by G. Surlovski.

Thanks to A. Li and K. Lager for notifying the event.

Release 5.2.8

The new release is finally out. Due to the crash on Frank's machine and my own lack of time, you'll notice that this release only consists of changes on city files (and a few new ones as well). Let's hope it gets better in the future...

Saturday, January 22, 2005

Friday, January 21, 2005

Nantes

Following on my recent comments about the Nantes (France) database, D. Guibert started to help me correct the existing errors. I'm not sure this will be complete for the next release, but it's getting better anyway.

Kyoto - Osaka - Kobe - Nara

After a question about an Osaka rail line, I have corrected some errors and added one line to the Nankai rail system in the Kyoto - Osaka - Kobe - Nara database.

I would like to remind users that the Kyoto file contains the subway and main tourist buses for this city, the Osaka - Kobe file contains the urban systems for both cities as well as connections between them and the Kyoto - Osaka - Kobe - Nara file contains the subways and most of the rail lines in the whole area.

A small change occured in the Nuremberg (Germany) network, notified by C. Eyrich, one of our most helpful contributors ;-)

Melbourne

D. Harrison sent a number of places of interest for the Melbourne (Australia) file. Maybe there will be more to come...

C. Scarnato has sent me the rest of the data for Bologna: the file should be complete (or almost) for the next release (which will probably be out early next week).

Wien / Vienna

I corrected a small error on tram line N in the Wien (Austria) network. And I was informed that the Teddy Bear Museum has been closed (since 2001!), so I removed it from the places of interest :-(

Monday, January 10, 2005

Karachi

As I wrote before, the Karachi (Pakistan) bus system is too large for the program to handle, but A. Allawala sent the data for a small part of it, covering the Green Bus & Metro Bus networks. We'll see if we can add more in the future...

i-Metro in italian

Thanks to E. Tassi, i-Metro (web, wap and i-mode versions) is now available in italian.

Monday, January 03, 2005

Brest

C. Guyon sent an update for Brest (France): one line has a new extension starting today.

Pakistan

Until now there were no database for Metro for any city in Pakistan. A. Ahmed has sent data for the inner city bus networks in 3 of them: Lahore, Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

He also offered to send the data for Karachi but unfortunately, with 377 lines, it's tool large for the software...

And I wish you all a happy new year!
