Users of our i-MetrO online service may have noticed that it has suffered some rather frequent outages recently and this has had an impact on our other services as well (MetrO online updates, mostly).

Icon change

Recently, I have had a few strong reactions to the tiny "bomb" icon that denotes an obsolete file in the city list in the MetrO program. Although I think this is quite exagerated, I will replace this icon with an exclamation mark in future releases.

Just for the record, I created the image after the (in)famous bomb I got so often on startup in the old days when I worked on a MacOS system...

New York

A.H. Li sent a notice about some important changes on the PATH rail system in New York (USA) as well as temporary changes (for works) in the subway.

Given the nature of the updates, I have released an intermediate file. You may get it here or through our usual "live" update services.

The closed station are simply marked as "closed" in this file. I may try to do better in the near future... Another update should come on September 18th at the latest (with the reopening of one station).

Oslo

A new subway section will open in Oslo (Norway) on August 20th and it will impact many bus services as well.

A. Norling, who reported the change, also provided a few additional bus lines and our database now contains almost all the transport systems in the city (the remaining bus lines are express lines or operate only on peak hours).

No news?

You may have noticed that there has been little news from MetrO these days.

Although it is holiday time for most people (at least here in France), I am actually very busy (with my job) and I don't have any free time left, even during the week-ends...

This situation may last a few more weeks but I will try to keep up with the most urgent updates. I hope I will be able to post some news about our files for New York, Oslo and maybe Manila before tonight.

MetrO setup for Windows Mobile

Owners of Windows Mobile devices may have noticed that, in our recent releases, we included a single setup program for both PocketPC & Smartphone editions. However this required some users to upgrade ActiveSync to version 4.1, which turned out to be a bad idea for older systems (thanks, Microsoft, that was a real nice move).

Consequently, we have reverted to different setups for PocketPC and Smartphone versions. The standard "metro.zip" package still contains both but they are now in separate directories: /PocketPC (for PocketPC devices, including Phone Edition) and /SmartPhone (well, for smartphones, obviously :-).

Download MetrUp 1.3.2 here.

If you have used version 1.3.1, it may have left incorrect files in the Metro directory on your memory card: if you find files with a .old extension, you should rename them to .pdb (simply removing all the .old extensions that appear).

  • Safer updates (if any error occurs during the update process, the old file is restored)
  • Access to the web service on our new server (see below)
  • Minor bug fix
For more details (and a download), see the MetrUp web page.

i-MetrO

Our online MetrO service, i-MetrO, is changing these days:
  • It is hosted on our new server (see below) at http://imetro.nanika.net (remember to update your bookmarks and other links)
The service should automatically detect whether you access it from a WEB or WAP browser. If you experience any problem, you may also use a more detailed URL. See details on our i-MetrO web page.

  • A new version for the Google Homepage is now available. To add i-MetrO to your personal Google Homepage, click on the button: Add to Google

A new web host for MetrO!

Some of you may have already noticed that we have started hosting our web site and services on a new server, in the hope that it will be more reliable and faster.

But it also allows us to host all our services under the same "nanika.net" domain name. Consequently, you should update your links to the new (simpler) URLs:

The existing links pointing to http://nanika.net/Metro are still operational and will be for the foreseeable future. On the other hand, if you use links pointing to chotto.free.fr, we strongly recommend an update since we will stop updating this server in the coming monthes.

Web hosting

After a long time of preparation, we are currently in the process of switching our hosting service provider. It will give us more flexibility with our different web sites and services and, hopefully, better performance.

The first change you will observe is that all our services will now be available under our domain name (nanika.net). The older URLs should still be working for a while, though. Here are some useful pointers:

I have just changed the name server for the domain a few minutes ago. It may take up to 48 hours for the changes to reach every corner of the world: please be patient if you cannot reach these new URLs in the meantime.

In case of trouble, the old version of the site is still available at http://chotto.free.fr/tatami/Metro. Please send me a mail - at akaiv (at) yahoo (dot) fr - if you observe persistent problems.

Finally, I would like to thank all the users who contributed through our PayPal donation system and thus allow us to provide this more professional hosting solution.

i-Métro

Google Maps is improving these days and I integrated some of the changes in our i-Métro service:
  • A new version of the API has been released and is now used in our service. You may not see much difference but it will allow for future enhancements.
  • More important, Google has added street maps for most of Europe (only satellite images were available before). i-Métro now defaults to a map view for all the covered cities. Of course, you may still switch to the satellite view if you prefer.

Reminder: i-Métro offers maps for Bologna, Hannover (for a few stops), Copenhagen, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, Sacramento (for a significant number of stops) and Paris (almost all stops).

Paris (works)

Two new stations will close tomorrow for works in the Paris (France) subway. Download the updated "temporary" files:
  • Paris-travaux (complete rail network)
  • Paris-full-travaux (inner city subway, bus and RER networks - not usable on a Palm device). This version contains the enhancement described below.

Next update planned on Monday, April 10th.

Paris ("full" & bus versions)

Our "full" database for Paris (France), containing the rail and bus networks for the inner city had never been completely accurate because it missed a lot of connections between the different systems. I have just spent the day checking the maps to add them all.

In the process, I also found some errors and changes on the bus network which will also be integrated in our "bus" database.

Note: I remind our users that the "full" version of the Paris file is not usable on Palm devices, because of some internal limitations in the OS.

Melbourne

D. Pickett suggested a few additions to the Melbourne (Australia), including a pair of tram lines we previously excluded because their routes are partially overlapping with other lines.
