i-MetrO for Layar

LayarDespite last week's update, we still had performance issues with i-MetrO for Layar. I think that Google App Engine - which I tried out for this service - was the main culprit. Consequently, I have moved everything back to our "regular" server and it now apparently runs smoothly.

Moscow

Subway line 3 in Moscow (Russia) has been extended, with 3 new stations.

New Year's Eve in Brussels

STIB We are pleased to anounce the release of a MetrO database for the special New Year's Eve service in Brussels (Belgium): the subway and a few tram lines will run during the night and the "Noctis" night buses will operate until 5 AM (but they will not go to the city centre before 1:30 AM). Transportation will be free during this time.

Download the "Bruxelles Réveillon" file here (also available on i-MetrO for the WEB, WAP & i-Mode and directly in the MetrO application on your iPhone or BlackBerry).

This database has been built in a rush and may contain errors despite my efforts to make it as accurate as possible. I apologize in advance...

i-MetrO for Layar

LayarI have worked a bit on i-MetrO for Layar, our service to locate metro, tram, railway, bus... stops in augmented reality on your iPhone or Android phone.

The new version, just released, includes:
  • 4 new cities: Atlanta (USA), Lausanne (Switzerland), Lyon (France) & Milano (Italy).
  • Up to date information for the other covered cities.
  • General improvements on the search engine.
It appeared our service had some latency problems, leading to errors in Layar because the software would not wait long enough for a response from our servers. I do not yet know whether these errors will be entirely solved but it can only run better!

Bratislava

P. Absolon sent a minor update for our Bratislava (Slovakia) database.

Bilbao

Carlos notified us of a wrongly positionned POI ("7 Calles") in our database for Bilbao (Basque Country, Spain).

DVBThe bus network in Dresden (Germany) has been completely overhauled a few days ago.

With help from R. Böhm and R. Lippold, we hastily built a new database that was used by the DVB call center (on i-MetrO) to answer inquiries by customers in the weeks before the changes took effect.

Now that the new network is in operation, I took some time to prepare our file for full release.

Shanghai MetroA new metro line (7) has opened in Shanghai (China), running only during daytime for the time being.

i-MetrO

i-MetrOThe "auto-suggest" feature on i-MetrO (as well as on our Netvibes widget) has just got better and more friendly to our users who don't have easy access to accents on their keyboard.

When you start typing text, the suggested stops are now insensitive to whitespace, control and accented characters. It means that, for example, you can type "aero" to find "Aéroport" and "stla", "st-la" or "st la" to find "St Lazare".

Thanks to I. Mills for pointing out the issue!

London

Richard sent a description of the "Chiltern Railways High Wycombe" line to add to our database for London (England).

However, it should be noted that these kinds of irregular routes are not optimal additions to MetrO, since the program can't tell which services serve which stops.

MetrO on BlackBerry Storm

BlackBerryI have had a few reports recently about issues with MetrO on the Blackberry Storm and Storm 2: the setup screens do not show any "OK" button, making it impossible to change the options.

After some exchanges with A. Godfrind & Affy (thank you both!), we have been able to spot the problem: after installation, the BlackBerry sets MetrO in "legacy mode" by default and it proves to be the wrong choice.

I will try to fix the issue but, in the meantime, you can just switch off this legacy mode, with a few steps:
  • Go to Options / Advanced Options / Applications
  • Highlight the "MetrO" application
  • Open the context menu and select "Disable Legacy Mode"
In some cases, the option may be available directly from the application list on the main screen.

I apologize for the inconvenience.
