Proxima Mobile: another waste of taxpayer's money?

Proxima MobileLast February, the French government, in the person of Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet (in charge of the "digital economy development") launched the "Proxima Mobile" portal, with a lot of press coverage. In the wake of the selection of 68 projects that were to be subsidized by the government in a generous anti-crisis package, the portal was setup to help reduce the digital divide in France, by promoting free, useful mobile applications to French citizens.

At the time, we thought MetrO would be a natural fit for this portal and we submitted our app for inclusion on February 18th, as we were invited to do. Our request was aknowledged the next week. Three months later, we have had no news and a quick look at the site shows that, apparently, no new application or service has been added since the opening.

I have just sent a mail to inquire about the situation but my guess is that this was yet another PR operation. I just wonder how much this costs to the (French) taxpayer...

Update - Surprisingly (for a Saturday), I got a quick reply to my mail: MetrO has been rejected (without any reason given) and I made false allegations since at least 3 new apps were added since the initial launch (at a rate of one every month, they certainly can take time to read their mail during the week-end).

Because of the nature of this post, here is a translation in French:

More frequent updates for MetrO cities

MetrOFor 10 years we have been delivering updates to our city databases along with our general MetrO releases, about once a month. Of course, we made a few exceptions for changes that needed a timely release, such as for our "works" databases (for Paris, Berlin & New York, mostly) but the standard process has remained the same over time.

At a time when the norm was the PDA and software installations through a PC, it made sense... But, with the generalization of smartphones with internet connectivity, most of you now install and update city files directly from your device and our monthly delivery is not very relevant.

For this reason, we have decided to accelerate the rythm: from now on, the updates to our city databases will be released at least once a week. For technical reasons, the releases will be synchronized with our updates for "works" databases (so, there will be at least one every Friday, with the updates for New York).

Please note that we don't intend to make an announcement every time: on most versions of MetrO, you have an option to "update all" databases and you should just use it once a week. Of course, this blog will still help you keep track of the changes and you will know that for every individual update announced, it will be available on your device one week later at the latest.

For those who don't want to be bothered with frequent updates, our usual release process will remain in place and our newsletter will provide a summary of changes about every month.

The first batch of updates has just been published and you can now download new versions of our files for Braunschweig, Copenhagen, Dalian, Den Haag, Dubai, Kraków, Marseille, Nanjing & Washington-Baltimore. These are all the cities that have been changed since our latest release and you might read the details about these changes in the entries below.

Update (05/15/2010)
On a suggestion by P. Karger, I have made a small change to our "smart download" page, that will allow users who download cities from their PC (and not "over the air") to get the latest versions of our files as well: if you select the current version of the program (5.8.8 as of this writing) in the version number list, you will only get the most recent city files in the resulting zip file.

MetrO for Android

AndroidWe have been receiving a lot of queries about a version of MetrO for Android in the last few months and it may be time we elaborate on the "under evaluation" status that appears on our website.

First, don't worry, not only have we heard your (loud) message but I have been using an Android phone (for about one year) and I strongly believe in its future: we will port MetrO to the Google platform!

Unfortunately, there is only the two of us (with daytime jobs) to maintain our existing versions of the program AND to keep our city data up to date. The latter takes me more than 3/4 of my free time, since there are so few people helping us with the task, and what would be the use of the program with obsolete information?

As some of you may know, our iPhone version is far from beeing complete and I struggle to find some time to bring it to the same level as our other versions. As a direct consequence, I have tried to focus as much as possible on the iPhone first and keep Android for a later time.

Given the rising success of Android phones in the market and the demand you generate, I will try to adjust my focus in the near future: I expect to deliver a new iPhone version soon (now under testing) and I will begin working on Android right after that, maybe before the end of the month, if everything goes fine.

But, please, don't get too excited, there is a lot to do before you see MetrO on the Android Market and it may take a few months, even for a "raw" version!

I think that's all we can tell on the subject today, now please stop sending us mails about it (you may comment here instead).

And help us updating our city data so we have more time for the development!

Update (July 31st, 2011): a preview version is now available. See details here.
